Free E-commerce Profit Calculator
Instantly find your recommended retail price. This 100% free tool accounts for your product cost, packaging, shipping, and payment processing fees. Understand the crucial difference between Profit Margin vs. Markup.
1 Enter All Your Costs
Start with your wholesale cost per unit, then add packaging costs and shipping to your warehouse. Don't forget import duties!
2 Set Payment Processing Fee
Stripe, Shopify, and PayPal typically charge 2.9%. The calculator adjusts your price to ensure you get your full profit after fees.
3 Choose Margin or Markup
This is critical! Margin = profit as % of selling price. Markup = profit as % of cost. They are NOT the same!
4 Set Your Desired Percentage
Use the slider to adjust your target margin or markup. Watch your retail price and profit update in real-time!
5 See Both Margin and Markup
The calculator shows you both the profit margin % and the equivalent markup %, so you understand exactly how your pricing works.
Pro Tip: Most profitable e-commerce stores target 40-60% profit margins. Start there and adjust based on your market!
Who Is This Tool For?
This calculator is designed for Shopify, Etsy, or standalone store owners who need to price their products with confidence. Whether you're selling handmade goods, dropshipping, or running a full-scale e-commerce operation, this tool ensures you're accounting for all costs and maintaining healthy profit margins.
The #1 Mistake E-commerce Sellers Make
The biggest trap in e-commerce is confusing "Profit Margin" with "Markup". They are not the same, and getting it wrong can cost you all your profit.
What's the Difference Between Profit Margin and Markup?
This is a common question, and understanding it is critical:
Profit Margin is your profit relative to the sale price.
Example: A $10 cost sold for $15 has a profit of $5. That's $5 ÷ $15 = 33% margin.
Markup is your profit relative to the cost.
Example: A $10 cost sold for $15 has a profit of $5. That's $5 ÷ $10 = 50% markup.
Notice how the same $10 → $15 transaction is a 33% margin but a 50% markup? This is why using the wrong calculation method can destroy your profitability!
Why Payment Processing Fees Matter
If you price a product at $10.00, you don't receive $10.00. After Stripe/Shopify takes their 2.9%, you receive $9.71.
Our calculator adjusts the final price slightly upward to ensure you receive your full target profit margin after fees. This is crucial for accurate pricing!
The Complete Cost of Goods Sold (COGS)
Many sellers forget to include all costs in their COGS. Make sure you account for:
- Wholesale price from manufacturer/supplier
- Packaging materials (boxes, labels, tissue paper, inserts)
- Shipping to your warehouse (freight, import duties)
- Storage/warehousing fees (if applicable)
- Quality control and inspection costs
If you don't include all of these, your "profit" will be much lower than you think!
